Soapstone update

Here is what I have been working on during my hiatus.

Day 67

A small army of paperclip sculptures. I've started working on the soapstone. I'm not sure if I'm going to post my progress every day or not. I might take a hiatus on the every day thing. Its still up in the air.

Day 66

Another possible design for the block. I am seriously considering attempting this.

Day 65

This is more of a possible concept for the stone sculpture than a piece in itself. I've decided that if I can't make the model out of sculpey, then it is too intricate or delicate to be made of soapstone. If anyone has any ideas for the 10 pound block, I would love to hear them.

Soapstone

Here is the block of soapstone that I bought the other day. In the picture on the left I am tilting it to show the sanded and oiled corner, so that you guys can see the color that it will end up as.

Day 64

There is a lot of sanding still left to do. Work is stopping on this for now until I can find my dremel.

Day 63

I made a big mistake today- I wasn't being careful enough. You might not be able to tell from the pictures. I'm just going to correct it as much as I can and go on.

I bought a ten pound block of soapstone today from Plaza Art. Its a beautiful green, and I'm really excited to start working on it. Definitely going to do a clay model for this one (for the one I'm doing now I did a ten second model and then started carving something similar).

Day 62

I'm going to be doing something kind of different for the next few days. I'm carving the little piece of soapstone that my dad got me, but its going to take a few days. I'll post a picture of my progress at the end of each day.

Day 61

Its a tiny rose. Maybe not my best work, but the soapstone I was working with today did not cooperate. Click on the picture, it looks better in a larger view.

Day 60

I was going to do what I did yesterday, which was create a female form and then make it abstract, but I decided to stick with part one today.

Day 59

I am experimenting with forms to make out of soapstone. This one does not make the cut, but it was interesting to make never the less.

Day 58

This may not be much to look at, but it is my sculpture for today. I made it from a piece of soapstone that my dad got me. I have the compulsive need to always be doing something with my hands, and I made this to carry around for that purpose. It has soft edges, rough edges, flat edges, and a side that fits the contours of my thumb. Soapstone is extremely soft to begin with, and it feels really nice to the touch.

Day 58

Harder than I thought it would be. Its supposed to be my nose, more or less.

Day 57

Well, what did you expect? A nose? Actually, I did try making a nose, but I made a weird mistake and ruined it. I left the clay to the left and almost under my computer for a little while, and it actually got partially cooked. You are supposed to cook it at something like 300 degrees- I know my computer runs hot, but jeez. It didn't fully vitrify, if you can use that word for sculpey, but it is dry and cracked and useless now.

PS- The fold on the top of the ear is a tribute to a particular ear that I happen to be especially fond of.

HB update

Check out the video. Not done quite yet- still need to do adjustments, and I need to mount it on my forearm and come up with a deployment mechanism, but I'm getting close.

Day 56

Anyone see a pattern here? As for what I plan on making tomorrow- who nose?
